The Whispers of Satan – Its Reasons and Its Role and Its Remedies

 

الحمد لله رب العالمين، والصلاة والسلام على أشرف الأنبياء والمرسلين، نبينا محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين أما بعد

 

From the methods that Satan uses to insinuate and encourage mankind upon evil is by way of whispers, such whispers can be in ordinary affairs which a person may undertake, at other times such whispers may relate to the affairs of a persons’ religion and even belief, the latter of which – although he should seek refuge with Allaah from it, it is a sign of a persons’ being upon Eemaan, and is a sign of good for such a person, since Satan attempts to whisper to the believers in order to cause them apprehension. Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said:

“Glad tidings; in that it has no outcomes for it except good outcomes, because these whispers – Satan assaults the believers by way of them, in order to shake the sound belief that is in their hearts, and so as to cast them into spiritual and mental apprehension, in order to tarnish upon them the clarity of Eemaan – rather the clarity of life; if they are believers.

His circumstance (i.e. the one who is whispered to) is not the first circumstance to befall the people of Eemaan, nor is it the last circumstance; rather it shall remain for as long as there remains a believer in the world.”[1]

 

Satan – an Avowed Enemy to Mankind and his Utilization of Whispers to Mislead the Son of Adam

 

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: “Indeed, Allaah, The Glorified, made Satan as an enemy for man, he lies in wait for him at the straight path, and he comes to him from every side and way, just as Allaah, The Most High, informed regarding him that he said:

لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ * ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ

((Surely I will sit in wait against them on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones.)) (Al-A’raaf: 16-17)

 

Allaah, The Most High, warned us against following him, and commanded us with treating him as an enemy and to oppose him. He, The Glorified, said:

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا

((Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy.)) (Al-Faatir: 6)

 

And He said:

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ لَا يَفْتِنَنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ كَمَا أَخْرَجَ أَبَوَيْكُم مِّنَ الْجَنَّةِ

((O Children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he caused your parents to be removed from Paradise.)) (Al-A’raaf: 27).”[2]

 

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said likewise: “When Iblees, the enemy of Allaah, came to know that the pivot is upon the heart and that dependence is upon it; he made assaults upon it with whispers, and advanced to it with the manifestations of desires and made fair seeming to it the statements and actions that would obstruct it from the path. He likewise furnished it with the factors to error with that which would sever it from the factors to attaining ability to success, and prepared for it the traps and snares which – if it was to be safeguarded from falling into them, it would not be safe from its being befallen by impediments due to them.

So there can be no salvation from his traps and his snares except by continued perseverance of appealing for aid and assistance from Allaah, The Most High, and to encounter the factors that lead to His Pleasure and of the heart seeking recourse to Him and its advent upon it in its motions and its conditions of rest, and actualization of humble submissiveness of servitude which itself is worthier of that which the individual should clothe oneself with, in order for there to be procured for him the entry into the assurance of:

إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ

((Indeed, My servants – you will have no authority over them)) (Al-Hijr: 42)”[3]

 

The Nature of the Whispers of Satan

 

The nature and method of the way that Satan whispers to a person is understood in the saying of Allaah, The Most High:

الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ

((Who whispers in the breasts of mankind)) (An-Naas: 5)

 

Al-Baghawi (rahimahullaah) said regarding this: “With concealed speech, the understanding of which reaches the heart – without hearing anything.”[4]

Satan whispers when he finds the opportunity, and then withdraws when the servant makes remembrance of his Lord. He, The Most High, said:

مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ

((From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws)) (An-Naas: 4)

 

Al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) said regarding this: “‘Abdullaah bin ‘Abbaas said: ‘Satan weighs heavily upon the heart of the son of Aadam, so when he becomes inattentive and is negligent – he whispers, and when he (the servant) makes remembrance of Allaah – he withdraws.’”[5]

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “The hearts have in them the whisperings of the soul, and Satan commands with desires and doubts of a nature that corrupts upon them the pleasant nature of their way of life.”[6]

Such whisperings often occur due to a neglect of the remembrance of Allaah, The Most High, and so as a result, Satan takes advantage of this breech and engages in whispering. Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “And Satan is a whisperer who withdraws, if the servant makes remembrance of his Lord; he withdraws, and if he becomes negligent in remembrance of Him; he whispers. It is due to this that the abandonment of the remembrance of Allaah is a reason as well as a basis for the descent of false belief and corrupt intent into the heart.”[7]

The one that follows and obeys such whisperings only allows himself to be subjugated to unnecessary burdens and of going into extremes and in some cases invalidating the reward he would have otherwise attained for such an action.

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: “And from his stratagems which he has reached with regard to the ignorant ones – in that which it has come to; is the whispering which he deceives them by way of in the affair of purification and prayer at the moment of summoning the intention, in order to cast them into burdens and shackles, and he takes them out from following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and so will make it appear to one of them that that which the Sunnah came with is insufficient, until he joins to it other than it (i.e by following whisperings). Thus he gathers for them between this corrupt thought, and the present toil of inconvenience as well as the invalidity of the reward – or its diminishment.”[8]

 

The Difference Between the Whispers of Satan and the Whispers of the Soul

 

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “Abu Haazim mentioned regarding the difference between the whispering of the soul and that of Satan when he said: ‘Whatever your soul dislikes for itself, then it is from Satan, so seek refuge with Allaah from it, and whatever your soul loves for yourself, then it is from your soul, so prohibit it from it.’”[9]

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said likewise: “The difference between praiseworthy inspiration and dispraiseworthy whispering is (decided by) the Book and the Sunnah, thus if that which is cast into the soul is from that which is proven by the Book and the Sunnah that it is from the Taqwa of Allaah, then it is from praiseworthy inspiration. Yet if it is from that which is proven that it is immoral; then it is from the dispraiseworthy whisperings, this difference is unvarying – it does not rescind.”[10]

 

Whisperings Often Stem From a Lack of Remembrance of Allaah and From Being Idle or Inactive

 

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “Silence void of recitation or dhikr (remembrance of Allaah) or du’a (supplication) is not worship, nor has it been commanded with. Rather it opens the door to whispering, therefore preoccupation with the remembrance of Allaah is better than being silent.”[11]

Shaikh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) said: “Negligence of the remembrance of Allaah and of recitation of the Qur’aan are from the reasons for the subjugation of the devils over the individual, as well as a multiplicity of whisperings and anxieties.”[12]

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) stated: “Being vacant (unoccupied) is an ailment that is deadly for the notion and the intellect as well as the bodily strength, since the soul must necessarily have movement and action for it. For if it is vacant from that, the notion goes into apathy and the intellect becomes dense and the movement of the soul weakens, and so the whispers and bad thoughts take over the heart.”[13]

 

Whisperings Occur with Everyone – But Satan Intensifies his Meddling Against the Servant if he Intends to Turn to his Lord

 

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “It is a must for the people at large that they experience these whisperings, so from the people are those that respond to them, thus he becomes a disbeliever or a hypocrite, and from them are those whose heart may be immersed in desires and sins, yet he does not take notice of it except if he seeks the religion.

Then he becomes either a believer or he becomes a hypocrite, and so due to this there occurs to the people by way of whisperings in the prayer – that which would not otherwise occur to them if they did not pray, because Satan intensifies his meddling against the servant if he intends to turn repentantly to his Lord and to draw close to Him and to make association with Him. Due to this, there occurs to the observers of prayer that which does not occur to other than them.”[14]

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said also: “Whispering occurs to everyone who makes advancement to Allaah, The Most High, with remembrance or other than it, it is a must for him by way of that. Therefore the servant should be firm and should be patient, and should adhere to that which he is in by way of remembrance and prayer and should not become exasperated. Since indeed; by way of his adherence to that, the deceitful plot of Satan departs from him,

إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا

((Indeed, the plot of Satan is ever feeble)) (An-Nisaa: 76)

 

Every time the servant wishes to make advancement to Allaah, The Most High, with his heart – other affairs arrive from whisperings. For indeed, Satan is at the level of the highway robber, every time the servant wishes to proceed to Allaah, The Most High, he intends to cut off the way upon him.”[15]

Imaam an-Nawawee (rahimahullaah) said: “Truly; Satan whispers to the one that he has despaired from misleading, he therefore harasses him with whispers due to his incapacity to mislead him. As for the disbeliever, then he comes to him from wherever he wishes, and does not limit himself in his regard to whispering, rather he trifles with him however he so wishes.”[16]

Point if benefit: “Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “You will find the things that are insignificant, Satan will not throw doubt regarding it into your heart – or disprove it. So you hear for example of the existence of large important cities, filled with residents and thriving populous in the east and the west, and yet it did not occur to your mind on any given day to doubt their existence or to denounce them in that they are in a state of desolation and ruin and are unfit for habitation and that there are no residents within them and the like of that.

Since; there is no objective for Satan in causing the person to doubt concerning that, however; Satan has a big objective in corrupting the faith of the believer. Since he endeavours with his cavalry and his infantry in order to extinguish the light of knowledge and guidance in his heart and throw him into the darkness of doubt and confusion.”[17]

 

Whispers that Prevent a Person from Performing Good Deeds for Fear of Being Seen by Others

 

From the plots of Satan which he utilizes to hinder the believer from performing good deeds, is that he will sometimes whisper to him that the good deed he is engaging upon is being done in the presence of others and thus is being done to be seen by them. This may cast the individual into doubting his own intention, or it may cause him to leave off the deed altogether, what is upon the person is to ignore such whisperings for as long as he is aware that his intention was for the sake of Allaah at the onset of performing that deed.

Muhi ud-Deen an-Nawawee (rahimahullaah) said: “One should not leave off making dhikr with the tongue along with the heart out of fear that it may be thought that there is ostentatiousness (showing off) with him. Rather; he should make dhikr by way of them both together, and should intend by it The Face of Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic. Al-Fudhail bin ‘Iyaad (rahimahullaah) said: ‘Indeed leaving off action because of the people is riyaa (ostentatiousness), and action because of the people is shirk.’ So if the person was to open the door of the observation of the people upon himself as well as cautiousness from dealing with their false suppositions; then most of the doors of good would certainly be shut off from him.”[18]

Ibn Hazm (rahimahullaah) said: “In the dispraise of ostentatiousness (showing off) Iblees has a snare, and that is that he may urge abstaining from doing good – for fear that it should be assumed to be ostentatiousness! So if this is set up for you from him, then persist upon your action, as he suffers severe pain over it.”[19]

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “Know that Satan may come to you when there is intent to carry out good, so he says: ‘you are only doing this out of ostentatiousness.’ So he thwarts your endeavour and impedes it.

However; you should not pay attention to this, nor should you comply with him – rather carry it out, even if he says to you that you are only doing this out of ostentatiousness and for the sake of being heard of.

Since if you were to ask: ‘Are you doing this now out of ostentatiousness and for the sake of being heard of?’ You will say: ‘No’

Therefore this is whispering that Satan has entered into your heart – do not pay attention to it.”[20]

 

Seeking Refuge With Allaah From Such Whispers

 

That which repels Satanic whispers is that when a person senses it, he seeks refuge with Allaah, and does so with conviction and earnestness and understands that when he seeks refuge with Allaah, then He will remove that from him.

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “This is from that which every single believer finds from himself, since Satan desires by way of his whisperings to preoccupy the heart away from benefiting from the Qur’aan, so Allaah has commanded the reciter – when he recites the Qur’aan, that he seeks refuge from him. He, The Most High, said:

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ * إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ سُلْطَانٌ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ * إِنَّمَا سُلْطَانُهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَتَوَلَّوْنَهُ وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِهِ مُشْرِكُونَ

((So when you recite the Qur’aan, seek refuge with Allaah from Satan, the rejected. Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord. His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who associate partners with Him.)) (An-Nahl: 98-100)

 

Indeed the one who seeks refuge with Allaah is seeking protection with Him, one seeking refuge with Him, seeking deliverance with Him from Satan, so the one seeking refuge with other than Him is seeking protection with him, so if the servant seeks refuge with his Lord, then he is seeking protection with Him, placing his trust upon Him. So Allaah grants him refuge from Satan, and affords him protection from him.”[21]

Al-Qurtubee (rahimahullaah) said: “As for His command with seeking refuge, then it is due to those whisperings being from the influences of Satan, and as for the command to desist; then it is from betaking oneself to it and paying attention and its like. So whoever is of sound Eemaan and utilizes that which his Lord and his Prophet have commanded him with; then it will benefit him and he will avail himself with it.”[22]

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “Satan whispers to the son of Adam in his worship, and in his dealings, and in all of his circumstances, until he leaves him unstable upon an issue from the affairs, and he may even corrupt the worship upon him from many aspects.

The remedy of that is that the person seeks refuge with Allaah from Satan – the rejected, and desists from whatever he has been whispered to with, and turns away from it.”[23]

 

From The Remedies Against Such Whispers

 

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “So this is from the most significant of that which by way of it, the whisperings are repelled: true determination together with seeking refuge with Allaah from Satan – the rejected as well as seeking aid from Him upon being resolute. Likewise that the individual does not pay attention to these whispers, not in the case of wudhu, or in the case of the prayer, or in the case of Tawaaf (circumambulation), or in the Sa’ee (walking between mounts Safaa and Marwa), or in anything besides them.”[24]

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said likewise: “So in purification for example, he comes to the person and says: ‘you haven’t washed your hand, and haven’t completed the washing, you haven’t enclosed your hand completely (with water) which is necessary to be washed, and the like of that. These whispering may even occur to him after he has finished performing wudhu. The remedy for all of that is that you say: I seek refuge with Allaah from Satan – the rejected, and that you turn away, even if Satan suggests to you that you haven’t completed the wash, or you have missed a limb from your limbs, it does not concern you, as long as the affair with you is by way of continuous whispering.”[25]

From that which keeps such things away is that a person overpowers his false desires, and therefore strengthens his humility and attentiveness in the prayer, Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: “The servant can only strengthen his attentiveness in the prayer and his preoccupation in it with his Lord, The Mighty and Majestic, if he overpowers his desire and his whim. Otherwise; a heart that has been overpowered by desire and has been made captive by whim, and Satan has found a seat in him – therefore becoming consolidated in him; how then can he be redeemed from whisperings and thoughts?”[26]

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned:[27] “And whoever says a hundred times during the day:

لا إلهَ إلاَّ اللَّه وحْدهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لهُ، لَهُ المُلْكُ، ولَهُ الحمْدُ، وَهُو عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِيرٌ

There is nothing worthy of worship except Allaah alone – without any partners for Him. Unto Him is the kingdom and for Him is the praise, and He has ability over all things.

It will be a protection for him against Satan for his entire day.”[28]

Recitation of the Qur’aan is a cure for that which is in the hearts and it repels whispers and false desires, as Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated:

“The Qur’aan is a cure for that which is in the chests, a repeller of that which Satan casts into it by way of whisperings and desires and corrupt intents.”[29]

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said likewise: “From the greatest of that which by way of it the evil whisperings are repelled is: recitation of the Mu’awwidhatayn (Soorah Falaq and Soorah An-Naas), and the beginning of As-Saafaat and the end of Soorah Al-Hashr.”[30]

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “The person should recite the Mu’awwidhatayn, and he should recite Soorah Al-Ikhlaas and Aayatul Kursi as well as two Aayahs at the end of Soorah Al-Baqarah. Likewise that which has come from the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa ‘alaa aalihi wa sallam) by way of the well known supplications pertaining to seeking refuge in the books of the people of knowledge such as the book: Al-Kalim at-Tayyib and Al-Waabil as-Sayyib and Al-Adhkaar.”[31]

Imaam an-Nawawee (rahimahullaah) mentioned: “The most beneficial remedy in repelling whispering is to engage upon the remembrance of Allaah, The Most High, and to be plentiful in regard to it. As-Sayyid al-Jaleel Ahmad bin Abil-Hawaari  said: I complained to Abee Sulaimaan Ad-Daarani with regard to the whisperings, so he said: ‘if you wish that it should be cut off from you, then any time you sense it – be delighted. Since if you are delighted with it, it will be cut off from you, because there is nothing more loathsome to Satan than the happiness of the believer, and if you are grieved by it – it will increase upon you.’”[32]

 

Practical Measures to Eliminate Whispers

 

Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said:

“Whisperings come about predominantly from inoccupation that is personal (pertaining to the individual) and mental – rather also bodily, because the person – if he is preoccupied, he gives regard to whatever he is engaged with, thus he is far removed from the thoughts and bad whisperings. However; despite that, whisperings may still come about, even with the presence of that which would preoccupy the thought and the body and the soul.

The method for getting away from it is as follows:

Firstly: Not to pay attention to it and give it any regard, so the person should not give it any attention, nor should he concern himself with it, he should likewise not grant it any significance in himself, such that if he is whispered to; then he should accustom himself that this affair is not a reality – then he should leave off thinking in regard to it, and this is the way to renouncing – meaning that he renounces himself from it and does not concern himself with it and does not pay attention to it.

The second way to elimination: is that he utilizes the factors that keeps one safe from it, and that is by way of being plentiful in seeking refuge with Allaah, The Most High, from Satan – the rejected, and from the whisperings. So at the moment that he seeks refuge he should feel two things:

The first of them: That he turns to Allaah, The Blessed and Most High, in a state of neediness – complete neediness from every aspect in that the person frees (himself) in this state from his power and his strength, and that he entrusts the affair to Allaah, The Glorified and Most High.

The second: Is that he senses that Allaah, The Most High, is completely able to remove that, because He, The Majestic and Most High, said:

إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

((His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it; “Be!” and it is.)) (Yaseen: 82)

 

Therefore one should have in this second affair strength in hope in Allaah, The Glorified and Most High, as well as to have good thought of Him, so that he may be freed from this malady which has afflicted him in his self.

The third way to free oneself from this affair: Is that at the time he is busied with the affairs of his religion and his worldly affairs – that he is diligent in them, meaning that he causes his heart to be present when carrying out the act for the act. At that point if his heart turns away from the whisperings and inactive mental thoughts to that of diligence in the act and looking at the affairs with an eye of earnestness, then the heart indeed moves and turns away, and directs its attention to these acts, and so with that it forgets, and hence those whisperings come away from it, as do the bad thoughts.

The fourth way to free oneself: Is that he should know that this affair – especially the whisperings pertaining to belief, and in that which is related to Allaah, The Blessed and Most High, and to His Names and His Attributes, that they came upon those more complete than us in Eemaan (faith) and superior to us in circumstance, and they were the companions (radhiyallaahu ‘anhum). Indeed they complained of that to the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), thus he commanded them that they seek refuge with Allaah, The Most High, from that, and that they should desist from it, as occurs in the hadeeth:

((Satan comes to one of you and says, ‘Who created such-and-such? Who created such-and such?’ until he says: ‘Who created your Lord?’ So, when he reaches it [i.e. Satan suggests it], then let him seek refuge with Allaah and desist [from such thoughts].))[33]

 

So with these four ways that come to mind at present, it would be possible for you to free yourself from these whispers which have afflicted you.”[34]

 

To Conclude

It is important to understand that however much a person senses the whispers of Satan and of their potency which he may feel at times in his chest, such whispers cannot harm him in any way, as long as one does that which he is able to repel and turn away from them.

Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said: “So beware that there should be anything concealed in your heart over which Allaah will hold you to account over, however the whisperings that occur to the heart and to which a person does not incline to – rather he fights it, and attempts to be distant from them in accordance to his ability, then it will not harm him in anything. Rather it is a proof of his Eemaan, because Satan comes to the heart and so dictates whisperings to it if the heart is sound.”[35]

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: “It was said to one of the Salaf: ‘Indeed the Jews and the Christians say: we are not whispered to!’ so he said: ‘They spoke the truth, and what is Satan to do with a ruined house?’”[36]
