Laylatul Qadr – A Night of Immense Virtues

الحمد لله رب العالمين، وصلى الله وسلم على نبينا محمد وعلى آله وأصحابه أجمعين، أما بعد

The Night in Which it Occurs

On the authority of ‘Aaishah (radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

((Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights during the last ten [nights] of Ramadhaan.))[1]

Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr (rahimahullaah) said: “Laylatul Qadr (the night of decree) is restricted to Ramadhaan, then in the last ten from it, then in its odd ones – not in a designated night from among them, and this is what the combined reports which have been stated concerning it indicate to.”[2]

Ibn ‘Abdil-Barr (rahimahullaah) said: “Indeed; a group from the people of knowledge held that Laylatul Qadr in every Ramadhaan is on the twenty first night, whilst others held that it is on the twenty third night every Ramadhaan. Yet others held that it is on the twenty seventh night every Ramadhaan, and others held that it changes position in each odd night from the last ten – and this is that which is correct with us – if Allaah wills.”[3]

It’s Virtues

Shaikh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee (rahimahullaah) said: “Due to its virtue it is equivalent to a thousand months, therefore the action carried out within it is better than the action of a thousand months which is devoid of it (the night). This is from that which has baffled the minds, and the intellects are astonished at it, in that He, The Blessed and Most High has granted favour upon this weak Ummah (nation) with strength and potency – with a night in which the action within it is in equivalence and in excess of that of a thousand months – the lifetime of a long-lived man who had a long life in excess of eighty years.”[4]

Shaikh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee said likewise:[5] “Know that it is from the wisdom of Allaah and His Mercy for you that He has hidden from you its concealment, in order that you should be plentiful in action which draws nearness to Him, and that you should attain ample reward and find favour with Him.

Indeed; whoever proficiently refines his intention and his purpose, and thus seeks it in anticipation (of reward), then it is a must that he is procured from its goodness. Since there is no believing man or believing woman except that they have a share from its grants and its benefaction – in accordance to one’s circumstance.

Therefore Allaah did not grant favour upon this Ummah with it except to give them from its comprehensive virtue, nor did He call them to perseverance in obedience except to elevate their ranks in gardens of delight. Hence; if the servant were to know of some of what is in it by way of reward; then he would strive hard in pursuit of it, and if his heart were to become busied over that which is in it from the secrets and the affairs of acquaintance; then he would find the hardship in exertion after it to be sweet.

A night in which the hearts are upon humility, and in which The Lord grants bountifully to His servants every good and what is requested, in it every servant who turns (to Allaah) devotes himself to The Lord, and takes from his Lord a more abounding share and a most complete portion. In it the sins and misdeeds are forgiven, and written down is all that is sanctioned for the servant in his year by way of good and bad, and obedience and misdeeds.

In the name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy:

((Hā-mīm. By the clear Book. Indeed, We sent it [the Qur’aan] down on a blessed night. Verily, We are ever warning. Therein [that night] is decreed every matter of ordainment. A command [the Decree of every matter or this Qur’aan] from Us. Verily, We are ever sending [the Messengers]. [As] a Mercy from your Lord. Indeed He is The All-Hearer, The All-Knower.))(Ad-Dukhaan: 1-6)

The Supplication Which is Recommended to be Said on Laylatul Qadr

On the authority of ‘Aaishah (radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa) who said, I said: “O Messenger of Allaah! What if I knew which night Laylatul Qadr was, what should I say in it?”

The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

((you should say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

(Allaahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee)

O Allaah; You are The One Who pardons greatly; and You love to pardon; so pardon me.))[6]

Imaam An-Nawawee (rahimahullaah) said: “Our companions have stated that it is recommended that one be plentiful in making this supplication, and it is recommended to recite the Qur’aan as well as making the other invocations. It is recommended that one is plentiful within it in making supplications for the important matters pertaining to the Muslims, for this is the distinctive sign of the righteous, and the well-acquainted servants of Allaah.”[7]
