30 Statements and Observations on the Raafidhah – by Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah

الحمد لله وحده، والصلاة والسلام على من لا نبي بعده، وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعد

The following selection of statements and observations were gathered from some of the works of Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) with regards to the Raafidhah Shee’ah. For the purpose of reference; each quote is followed by its source to its relevant work, this being either Minhaaj us Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah (abbreviated as MSN) or Majmu’ Fataawa (abbreviated as MF) along with the relevant volume and page number.

The origin of the Raafidhah:

1 “The one that innovated the madhab of the Raafidhah was a heretical atheist; an enemy of the religion of Islaam and its people.” (MSN 4/363)

2 “The origin of Rafdh (the Raafidhee ideology) stems from the conventions of a nation of heretical hypocrites, their intent being a disparagement of the Qur’aan and the Messenger and the religion of Islaam.” (MSN 7/9)

3 “Rafdh (the Raafidhee ideology) is derived from: shirk and atheism and hypocrisy, however; sometimes it becomes apparent from them and at other times it is hidden.” (MSN7/27)

4 “The people of knowledge have cited that the origin of Rafdh (i.e. the Raafidhee ideology) came from the heretic: ‘Abdullaah bin Saba, for he manifested Islaam whilst he concealed Judaism, and so sought to corrupt Islaam…” (MF 28/483)

5 “The scholars always mention that the one who innovated Rafdh (the Raafidhee ideology) was a heretical atheist, his intent was to corrupt the religion of Islaam.” (MSN 7/219)

The extent of the deviancy and misguidance of the Raafidhah and their distance from the religion of Islaam:

6 “Allaah Knows – and sufficient is Allaah as A Knower; that there is not to be found in all of the sects that affiliate themselves to Islaam – despite their innovations and misguidance in being more evil than them. Not more ignorant nor more dishonest nor more oppressive nor being closer to disbelief and wickedness and sinfulness as well as being the furthest from the realities of Eemaan than them.” (MSN 5/160)

7 “Likewise it is known to anyone possessing intelligence that there is not to be found amongst the well known scholars of the Muslims anyone who is a Raafidhee. Rather; they are all unanimous upon the ignorant nature of the Raafidhah and of their misleading deception and their books are all in testimony to that.” (MSN 4/130)

8 “And Allaah Knows that – despite my extensive research and my investigations into understanding the statements of the people and their madhabs, I have not known of a man of honourable mention in the Ummah who has been accused of being from the madhab al-Imaamiyyah – let alone that it be said that he believes in it inwardly.” (MSN 4/131)

9 “Did then any one from the notables of the companions of Ash-Shaafi’ee and Ahmad and the companions of Maalik become known as being a Raafidhee? Or was it the case that it was known out of sheer necessity that every eminent one from them was from the staunchest of people in indignation of Rafdh (the Raafidhee ideology). Indeed; a group from the followers of the Imaams may well have been accused of having had inclinations to a form of I’tizaal (the Mu’tazilee ideology), yet it was not known from a single one of them that he was accused of possessing Rafdh; this being due to Rafdh being at a distance from the path of the people of knowledge.” (MSN 4/135)

10 “Whoever observes the books of Al-Jarh wa Ta’deel that have been authored regarding the names of the narrators and the transmitters and of their circumstances; such as:

Yahyaa bin Sa’eed Al-Qattaan

‘Ali bin Al-Madeenee

Yahyaa bin Ma’een

Al-Bukhaaree and Abee Zur’ah

Abee Haatim Ar-Raazee and An-Nasaa-ee

Abee Haatim bin Hibbaan

Abee Ahmad bin ‘Adee

Ad-Daaraqutnee

Ibraheem bin Ya’qoob Al-Jawzjaanee As-Sa’dee

Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan Al-Faswee

Ahmad bin ‘Abdillaah bin Saalih Al-‘Ijlee

Al-‘Uqailee

Muhammad bin ‘Abdillaah bin ‘Ammaar Al-Musulee

Al-Haakim An-Naisaaburee

Al-Haafidh ‘Abdul-Ghanee bin Sa’eed Al-Misree

As well as the likes of these that are endowed with expert authority and those that can make critical analysis and the people of understanding of the circumstances of the chains of transmission – then he will come to see that that which is known with them of lies is to be found in the Shee’ah more so amongst them than in all of the other sects.” (MSN 1/66)

11 “There is not to be found amongst the sects that affiliate themselves to the qiblah one as being greater in fabricating lies upon Allaah as well as denial of the truth than those that associate with Tashayyu’ (Shi’ism). Due to this; extremism is not to be found in a group more so than as can be found amongst them.” (MSN 2/34)

12 Regarding the books of the various sects in their mention of the Raafidhah Shaikh ul Islaam said:

“For they always cite the ignorance of the Raafidhah and their misguidance – that which is necessarily known; they believe that the Raafidhah are from the most ignorant of people and the most misguided of them as well as being from the most distant of the sects of the Ummah from guidance. How is it when the ideology of these Imaamiyyah comprises of the greatest aspects of reprehensible innovations – for they are Jahmiyyah Qadariyyah Raafidhah, and the speech of the Salaf and the scholars in censuring each type from these varying sorts cannot be enumerated except by Allaah.” (MSN 4/131)

13 “Whoever has the slightest familiarity with the religion of Islaam will know that the Raafidhee ideology is in contradiction to it.” (MSN 8/479)

The Raafidhah and the characteristics of deceit and hypocrisy:

14 “These Raafidites are either hypocrites or either an ignorant one, hence a Raafidhee or a Jahmee will not be except a hypocrite or ignorant of that which the Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came with. Absent amongst them is anyone who is knowledgeable of that which the Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came with along with having Eemaan in it. For indeed their being in opposition to that which the Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) came with as well as their lies upon him is not at all hidden except to the one who is excessive in ignorance and desires.” (MSN 5/161-162)

15 “Indeed, the people of knowledge are agreed upon in tradition (account) and in narration as well as through the chains of transmission upon the fact that the Raafidhah are the most dishonest (untruthful) of the groups; and lying in and amongst them is ancient. Due to this the Imaams of Islaam knew of their distinction due to the great frequency of lying.” (MSN 1/59)

16 “Allaah has described the hypocrites in more than one place with the characteristics of: lying and treachery and betrayal; and yet these traits are not to be found in a group more so than amongst the Raafidhah.” (MSN 6/427)

17 “Hypocrisy and heresy amongst the Raafidhah is much more than in the rest of the groups, rather it is a must that each of them should possess a branch of hypocrisy. For indeed the foundation of hypocrisy upon which lies are built is that the person should utter with his tongue that which is not in his heart, as Allaah, The Most High informed regarding the hypocrites that they utter with their tongues that which is not to be found within their hearts, and yet the Raafidhah endorse that as being from the very principles of their religion – and they call it At-Taqiyyah.[1] They allege this to come from the Imaam of the Ahlul Bait (the Prophet’s household) – whom Allaah has made free (cleared) from that, such that they allege that upon Ja’far As-Saadiq that he said: ‘At-Taqiyyah is my religion and the religion of my forefathers.’ Yet Allaah has respectfully kept the believers from Ahlul Bait as well as other than them free of that, rather they used to be the greatest of people in honesty and in actualisation of Eemaan. Their religion was At-Taqwaa – not At-Taqiyyah.” (MSN 2/46)

18 “So as for the Raafidhah, they do not deal with anyone except that they utilise hypocrisy with him. Indeed; his religion which he possesses in his heart is a religion which is corrupt, enticing him into telling lies and committing treachery and cheating the people as well as intending evil towards them.” (MSN 6/425)

19 “It is known that they are the closest of the sects of the people of Islaam to hypocrisy; as well as the furthest of them from Eemaan…

…Thus it is known that between the souls of the Raafidhah and the souls of the hypocrites there is absolutely pure consensus, proportionate in mutuality and similarity; and this is due to that which is found in the Raafidhah from hypocrisy – for indeed hypocrisy has branches.” (MSN 6/426)

20 “There may be found amongst those that attribute to a madhab of the four Imaams one who is inwardly a Raafidhee, just as there are to be found amongst those that manifest Islaam one that is inwardly a hypocrite. For indeed the Raafidhah; being from the stock of the hypocrites, they hide their affair, so they are in need of making apparent other than that – just as the hypocrites are in need of making apparent something other than disbelief. This is not to be found except amongst those that are ignorant of the circumstances of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and the affairs of the Muslims in how they were in the early part of Islaam. As for the one that knows of how Islaam was; and he acknowledges that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah – inwardly and outwardly; then he desists from being a Raafidhee inwardly. Nor can it be comprehended that inwardly one should be a Raafidhee except for the one who is a heretic or a hypocrite or is ignorant of Islaam in how it was; and is excessive in ignorance.” (MSN 4/133-134)

The Raafidhah and the trials which befall the Ummah:

21 “As for fitnah (trial/tribulation); then it indeed manifested in Islaam by way of the Shee’ah, for they are the foundation of every fitnah and evil.” (MSN 6/364)

22 “The source of every fitnah and calamity are the Shee’ah and those that rally around them, and many a sword that has been unsheathed (i.e. drawn) in Islaam came from their very direction. Likewise it is known that their origins and their fundamental constituents are hypocrites, they concocted fallacies and innovated corrupt opinions in order to corrupt the religion of Islaam by way of them. In order to cause a slip by way of them to those that are not of understanding. Hence they set out to kill ‘Uthmaan – and it was the first of the tribulations, then they withdrew to ‘Ali, not out of any love for him and nor for the Ahlul Bait but rather to set up the outlet of fitnah between the Muslims.” (MSN 6/370)

23 “Let every intelligent one observe that which occurs in his own era; as well as that which his era advances towards by way of trials and evils and corruptions in Islaam. For he will indeed find that the majority of that is by way of the Raafidhah, you will find them to be from the greatest of people in trial and evil doing, they do not desist from that which is within their capacity to carry out by way of trial and evil doing and inflicting corruption between the Ummah.” (MSN 6/372)

The treachery of the Raafidhah towards the people of the Sunnah and their alliances with their opponents:

24 “For indeed we have seen; as have the Muslims also seen the fact that when the Muslims are put to tribulation due to a disbelieving enemy; they will be with them against the Muslims, as took place with Genghis Khan the disbelieving ruler of the Tartars. For indeed; the Raafidhah aided him over the Muslims.” (MSN 5/155)

25 “It is known that there was a large mountain on the shores of Ash-Shaam wherein there were thousands of Raafidhah who would shed the blood of the people and take their wealth. They killed a great amount of people and so took their wealth, so when the Muslims were dejected in the year of Ghazaan (i.e. 699H), they took the horses and weapons and the captives and sold them to the disbelievers and to the Christians in Cyprus. They captured those that passed them by from the military; and they were more harmful to the Muslims than all of the enemies. Some of their Ameers held the banners of the Christians – and when they said to him: ‘who is better; the Muslims or the Christians?’ he replied: ‘rather the Christians’, so he said to him: ‘with whom shall you be resurrected with on the Day of Resurrection?’ he said: ‘with the Christians’. Thus they surrendered to them some of the Muslim lands.” (MSN 5/158-159)

26 “Along with this the Raafidhah aid those disbelievers and support them against the Muslims, just as the people had witnessed when Hulegu – the disbelieving ruler of the Turks (Tartars) entered Ash-Shaam in the year six hundred and fifty eight. For the Raafidhah that were in Ash-Shaam and the cities and the capital cities – from the people of Aleppo and its environs and the people of Damascus and its environs and other than them, they were the greatest of people as aiders and facilitators upon establishing his sovereignty, likewise to carry out his orders in cessation of the sovereignty of the Muslims.” (MSN 6/374)

The objective of the Raafidhah:

27 “The Raafidhah have no endeavour except in the demolition of Islaam, as well as to breach and so befall it and corrupt its principles.” (MSN 7/415)

28 “The Raafidhah disparage the companions as well as their transmissions (reports), whilst the hidden essence of their affair is: a disparagement of the Messengership.” (MSN 3/463)

29 “It is commonly perceived by the masses that in opposition to the Sunni it is the Raafidhee only, due to their manifesting opposition to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and the legislations of his religion against all of the other people of desires…

…The majority of their Imaams are heretics, and so they manifest Rafdh (the Raafidhee ideology) because it is the path to destroying Islaam.” (MF28/482-483)

30 “The utmost degree of their affair: is to make takfeer of ‘Ali and the people of his household after they have made takfeer of the companions and the people.” (MSN 7/409)

May Allaah have mercy upon Shaikh ul Islaam; and may He reward him with all that is good and raise him in the Hereafter for his efforts in clarifying the religion and refuting and so exposing the people of innovations and desires not just for the people of his era, but for those that were to come after him. How true then is the statement of Ibn Taymiyyah regarding the Raafidhah when he said regarding them:

“The like of them is the like of one who comes to a large flock of sheep, so it is said to him: ‘give us the very best of this flock so that we may sacrifice it.’ So he turns to the very worst of that flock; to a one-eyed emaciated limping – haggardly gaunt one; having no fine selection to it. Then he says: ‘this is the best of this flock, it is impermissible to make a sacrifice except by way of it and the rest of this flock are not sheep, rather they are pigs that are incumbent to be culled, and so it is not permissible to sacrifice except with it.’” (MSN 5/161)

[1] Shaikh ul Islaam himself defines the meaning of At-Taqiyyah in his statement: “and the pinnacle of the wealth of the Raafidhah is At-Taqiyyah, and it is to manifest that which is in opposition to what is hidden (inwardly) – as is done by the hypocrite.” (See: Minhaaj us Sunnah vol 6 p.421)
